Star Citizen Piracy: The SPECTRE Guide
Piracy is one of the most exciting ways to play Star Citizen: real targets, real cargo, real negotiations. This Star Citizen piracy guide covers how to become a pirate: Mantis snare and QED interdiction, ground piracy, disabling ships, CrimeStat and finding the right pirate org. Written by SPECTRE, a Star Citizen pirate organization, and backed by CatchIT, our free snare planning tool. The full length version with a step by step snare walkthrough and FAQ is available in German: Star Citizen Piraterie Guide.
What is piracy in Star Citizen?
Piracy means intercepting ships that carry something valuable and making their cargo yours. It is a gameplay loop that Cloud Imperium Games built into the game on purpose: there are no-questions-asked terminals for stolen goods, outlaw stations like GrimHEX, and with Pyro an entire lawless star system. Pirates negotiate first, take what they came for, and let their targets fly on. That is what separates piracy from griefing.
Types of piracy
At its core there are two hunting grounds, the ground and space, the hunt that mixes both, and the ruse that needs no weapons at all. Anything that owns something is a target: traders, miners, haulers, salvagers.
Ground piracy
Stay where the cargo is: outposts, depots, landing pads. Strike while they load, or sneak aboard unnoticed and wait for the right moment.
Quantum snare
Park an RSI Mantis on a quantum route and pull travelers out of their jump with the QED. Position is everything, that is what CatchIT is for.
The mix
Fly over locations with your quantum dampener active and search the surface for miners and traders. Once you have found someone, they are not getting away.
Social engineering
Sometimes the best weapon is voice chat: be friendly, start a conversation, get someone into your party. Party members share ship permissions, doors and elevators open on their own, and the cargo changes hands without a single shot.
Everything else is not a separate style but craft that belongs to every raid: scouting and scanning, disabling the target with QED, EMP or distortion, boarding when nobody talks, and negotiating the ransom. Boarding is as much a part of a snare as it is of a ground raid.
Mantis snare & QED interdiction
The heart of modern Star Citizen piracy is the quantum snare. Ships travel on predictable lines between planets, moons and stations. Park an RSI Mantis on such a line, activate the QED, and passing ships drop out of quantum right into your trap. The hard part is standing in exactly the right spot: your snare bubble has to cover the route, away from comm arrays and station physics grids.
That is what CatchIT is for: plan your snare position on a 3D starmap, check the coverage in advance, then fly there in game, type /showlocation in chat and paste the coordinates into CatchIT to verify you are standing exactly right. CatchIT also ships ready-made snare routes, so you can pick a proven spot without much thinking, plus points of interest and cross-system trade lanes for Stanton, Pyro and Nyx. Free for everyone.
Disabling ships: EMP, distortion & QED
Dead targets pay no ransom, and exploded cargo is worthless. Pirates disable ships instead of destroying them:
- Quantum snare (QED): pulls ships out of quantum travel and blocks jumps inside its bubble.
- Quantum dampening: stops a caught ship from spooling its quantum drive or switching to NAV mode. Stuck at SCM speed, nobody gets away.
- EMP: charges up and knocks out systems in a radius, classic on the Aegis Avenger Warlock. It only really bites once the shields are down, and keeping a ship offline means spamming it again and again.
- Distortion weapons: our weapon of choice. No hull damage, they overload the power systems instead. One shield face down and hits on the hull are enough, ideally where key components sit. Then keep firing to keep it offline: nothing breaks, but stop shooting and the target powers back up.
- Tractor beam: moves the cargo from their hold into yours.
As of Alpha 4.8. Exact ranges and values change with patches.
CrimeStat & lawless space
In monitored space, crimes committed under an active comm array raise your CrimeStat from level 1 to 5: security comes after you, from level 3 a bounty is placed on your head, and getting caught ends in the Klescher prison. Comm arrays can be disabled, and a CrimeStat can be paid off as a fine as long as there is no murder on your record. If there is, only hacking a security terminal at Security Post Kareah or serving time in Klescher clears it. In Pyro there is no law at all: no CrimeStat, only your reputation with the local factions.
Where piracy pays: Stanton, Pyro & Nyx
Simple: anywhere the loot is. Loot follows the money: traders on their routes, miners heading home with full holds, haulers between stations. You find that in Stanton just as much as in Pyro and Nyx. And do not worry: pirates do not have to hide in Pyro. With a plan, you hunt just fine in monitored space. Where the loot flies changes with every patch and market shift, which is why CatchIT tracks cross-system trade lanes and POI data: you see where the activity is, what the cargo is worth and where the wait pays off.
Join a Star Citizen pirate org
Piracy is team gameplay: interdiction, escort, boarding and cargo transport are separate roles. A good pirate org gives you training, experienced wingmates, planned operations and a network that turns loot into money. SPECTRE [SPECR] is a German-speaking Star Citizen pirate org with its own code of honor: negotiation first, no griefing, and a word that counts. We built CatchIT and share it with the whole community for free. If you want to learn piracy properly, join us.
